Most of us are pretty darn good at accumulating stuff \u2014 and cleverly stashing it around our\u00a0homes to give us the false security that comes with thinking we\u2019re not slobs, hoarders or worse.<\/p>\n

Then it comes time to move, and all of a sudden we realize we don\u2019t actually need 50 magazines\u00a0from 2005 or all six yearbooks from elementary school.<\/p>\n

Are you planning to move sometime soon? If so, take some time before your current lease is up\u00a0to organize your belongings. In doing so, you can ensure you\u2019ll have less clutter at your new\u00a0place \u2014 which should make you happier, at least on some level.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s take a look at seven tips you should keep in mind when you\u2019re moving to a new apartment:<\/p>\n

1. Start preparing for your move right away.<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s never too early to start organizing\u00a0your stuff to prepare for your next move \u2014 even if you\u2019ve signed something like a five-year lease. There\u2019s a reason we all know the phrase \u201cspring cleaning.\u201d It\u2019s productive to\u00a0get rid of the garbage in our lives, because clutter causes fatigue. Start planning ahead\u00a0for your move right now<\/a>. You\u2019ll get an idea of how much stuff you have, and you\u2019ll also\u00a0get rid of some junk.<\/p>\n

2. Know the size of your next place.<\/h3>\n

Are you moving into a tiny studio in the big\u00a0city? Or did you find an ideal farmhouse in the middle of nowhere? Before you can give\u00a0your belongings an honest look to see what you should keep, you need an idea about the\u00a0size of your next place, so you know about how much stuff you can reasonably expect to\u00a0take with you.<\/p>\n

3. Determine which possessions you can\u2019t live without.<\/h3>\n

We all have possessions\u00a0we couldn\u2019t imagine life without: old pictures, laptops, hard drives, musical instruments,\u00a0clothes, keepsakes and the like. Take an inventory of the items you aren\u2019t willing to part\u00a0with. You can then begin to imagine how those belongings will be stored in your new\u00a0space.<\/p>\n

4. Figure out which possessions you can sell, donate or recycle.<\/h3>\n

When you move,\u00a0you realize that many of the possessions you\u2019ve been stockpiling are completely\u00a0worthless. You can throw those things away. You\u2019ll also find that you\u2019ve changed your\u00a0opinion about a few of your possessions. It still works and serves a purpose, but you\u00a0don\u2019t want anything to do with it. Rather than throwing it all away, considering selling it\u00a0to make some cash to help with your move. Otherwise, you can donate or recycle it<\/a>.<\/p>\n

5. Ask yourself if you need self-storage.<\/h3>\n

Will everything you want to keep fit in your\u00a0new place? Probably not. If you\u2019re moving into a newer apartment, don\u2019t worry about\u00a0bringing things like window insulation with you. Typically newer apartments that are\u00a0labeled Energy Star are about 15% more efficient<\/a> in terms of energy saving. If you want\u00a0to hold onto a few items, look at self-storage options, but be warned: do your research\u00a0before renting one.<\/p>\n

6. Throw away your clutter.<\/h3>\n

At this point, you should have determined what you want\u00a0to keep and what you want to get rid of. During the course of that decision-making\u00a0process, you probably threw a lot away. Now, throw out even more. You don\u2019t need 17\u00a0pairs of shoes, let alone 29 pairs of socks \u2014 at least five of which are stained.<\/p>\n

7. Organize your new apartment.<\/h3>\n

Now that you\u2019ve cleared a lot of junk from your life\u00a0and moved into your new space, it\u2019s time to thoroughly organize your belongings. If\u00a0necessary, purge more stuff that made the first cut. At the very least, an organized\u00a0apartment should give you a head start on preparing for the next move.<\/p>\n
