I live in a rental and put together a list of things I want to get better at in 2017. Maybe\u00a0you&#8217;ll find them helpful, too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Add some greenery.<\/strong><br \/>\nPlants are the easiest way to make it seem like you renovated your entire space. In a desperate attempt to cover my old linoleum floor, I potted a bunch of plants and grouped them together in my kitchen like a little greenhouse. Suddenly it became my favorite spot in my whole house. Plant magic is real!<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve written about the best plants for <a href=\"http:\/\/fourwalls.rentler.com\/2015\/03\/13\/a-plant-guide-for-apartment-problems\/\">apartment-dwellers before<\/a>;\u00a0but\u00a0if you&#8217;re still afraid of caring for a living thing, you can always opt for\u00a0adding non-living items in Pantone&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pantone.com\/color-of-the-year-2017\">color of the year<\/a>, Greenery.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1916\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1916\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/rdFtO8LDWb\/?taken-at=8136085\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1916 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/fourwalls.rentler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Screen-Shot-2017-01-04-at-11.23.08-AM-500x482.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rentler.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Screen-Shot-2017-01-04-at-11.23.08-AM-500x482.png 500w, https:\/\/www.rentler.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Screen-Shot-2017-01-04-at-11.23.08-AM-436x420.png 436w, https:\/\/www.rentler.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Screen-Shot-2017-01-04-at-11.23.08-AM.png 596w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1916\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">image via designlovefest<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Cut the electric bill.<\/strong><br \/>\nI pay utilities at my apartment and the power bill can get outrageous, especially in winter when I tend to use a space heater like it&#8217;s the only thing keeping me from freezing to death. Step one is to be better at turning off my lights when I&#8217;m gone, step two is slowly replacing them all with LED bulbs.<\/p>\n<p>According to Energy Star, you can\u00a0save up to $75 a year on average by using LED or CFL bulbs, which last longer and use less energy than other bulbs. Even if you don&#8217;t pay for utilities, switching out all your lightbulbs with energy efficient ones is a wise choice environmentally.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Splurge on one upgrade.<\/strong><br \/>\nEvery January I get caught up in the frenzy of a fresh start and start buying a bunch of inexpensive\u00a0items in order to cheaply overhaul my apartment. This is bad and this is why I&#8217;m on my third Ikea table.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I want\u00a0to save up during 2017 and at the end of the year buy the one thing at the top of my wishlist. This year, I plan to set up a cleaning rotation to make it less overwhelming\u00a0when Saturday rolls around and my apartment\u00a0is a disaster.
