Terrapin Gardens is a breathtaking Lowcountry retreat on over an acre of pristine James Island landscape, where towering oaks, wide marsh views, and serene privacy set the tone for an unforgettable stay. This three-bedroom, three and a half-bathroom home blends timeless Southern charm with thoughtful modern comforts, offering a setting so beautiful and unique it feels cinematic. In fact, some of Netflix’s Outer Banks was filmed just nearby.

Steeped in history, the land was once the site of the Civil War’s Battle of Secessionville- one of the few battles won by the South. A historical marker stands at the edge of the property, and a small annual remembrance takes place about half a mile away. The area was originally known as Riversville, an antebellum village founded in 1851 by Constant H. Rivers, later renamed Secessionville in 1861. Today, it’s a peaceful, tucked-away enclave that feels worlds apart, yet remains close to the restaurants, beaches, and conveniences of Charleston.

A wide front porch with classic rocking chairs welcomes you inside, where you are immediately met with warmth and character. The dining room sits to the right with seating for six, while a formal sitting room is positioned to the left- an inviting space for conversation or quiet reading. Just beyond the dining room is the newly renovated chef’s kitchen, a true showstopper with a massive island, high-end stainless appliances, abundant counter space, and a large sink overlooking the lush yard. Natural light fills the room, making it feel bright, crisp, and inspiring.

The kitchen opens seamlessly into the living room, where vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, a decorative fireplace, plush sectional seating, and a smart TV create a cozy atmosphere. Two sets of doors lead outside- one to a grilling area with a high-top table, and the other to the stunning back porch, arguably the crown jewel of the home. This expansive outdoor living space offers sweeping marsh views framed by ancient oaks, comfortable lounge seating, a mounted TV, and a large dining table. It’s a place where mornings stretch long, evenings linger, and everything in between feels effortless.

The first-floor primary suite features a king bed, generous closet space, a dresser, and a smart TV. The spacious ensuite bathroom includes double vanities, a makeup counter, a large tiled shower, a soaking tub, and a separate water closet. A laundry room with full-size machines is conveniently located just off the suite, which also reconnects to the front sitting room, creating an easy, intuitive flow.

Upstairs are two beautifully appointed bedrooms, each with a queen bed, ample closet space, and access to its own full bathroom with a tub/shower combination and vanity. Between the rooms is a comfortable study and lounge area with a desk, perfect for remote work or quiet downtime.

Stepping outside, the magic only deepens. The backyard is a private, professionally landscaped sanctuary with a sparkling pool overlooking the marsh and plenty of chaise lounges for sun-soaked afternoons.
