Designed by architect George Stoddard and built in 1930, the Normandy Arms is a fine example of his early work centered on period revival styles, in this particular case French Norman. The style became popular after GI's returned from WWI having exposure to the architecture of the Normandy region of France. Stoddard also designed Tacoma's Winthrop Hotel (1925); the Seville Building (1929); and a number of large residences in the neighborhoods of Broadmoor, Queen Anne, Capitol Hill and Laurelhurst. Stoddard would go on to embrace midcentury styles and one of his later structures of note is the Green Lake Aqua Theater in Seattle and the addition to the University of Washington Stadium South Stands (both 1950).
